guest room makeover

wow, I can’t believe it’s taken me so long to carve out some time to work on a house project! How does the saying go? The shoemaker’s children have no shoes. Welp, the Vogel household has nary a finished room. Well, that’s not entirely true… but kind of.
I have a tough time finishing projects at home because I set little rules for myself… “no curtains until you replace the windows” or “no new furniture until you finish painting the new doors.”

And of course then I box myself into a corner since I book my life up to the minute and then I just grow annoyed with the whole thing and bail to my shop to work on consignment pieces.

I had a great lunch date with my mom earlier this week where we talked about the struggle of balancing friends, family, home and yourself. I’ve found myself recently feeling a little overwhelmed which means I need to take a step back and re-evaluate. I tend to set the bar so high in terms of output that I don’t ever feel fulfilled unless I’m rapidly crossing things off the to-do list. A bad habit for sure! So like the author Brian Tracy says, I’m learning to eat the frog.

According to Brian, there’s an old saying that if the first thing you do each morning is to eat a live frog, you’ll have the satisfaction of knowing that it’s probably the worst thing you’ll do all day. If you use “eat that frog” as a metaphor for tackling the most challenging task of your day—the one you are most likely to procrastinate on, but also probably the one that can have the greatest positive impact on your life— you’ll be able to zero in on those really critical tasks… You’ll not only get more done faster, but get the right things done. And thats something I can really get on board with.

Since we’re talking amphibians… let’s call our larger of two guest rooms Kermit the Frog. Sweet… but vaguely annoying… and not willing to commit. We’ve been using it as Jeff’s personal closet and catch-all when not entertaining and it’s been home to my childhood furniture – a Broyhill set thats begging for a make-over of its own!

Time for an upgrade! Am I right?

I’ve been dragging my feet about colors and style but decided once I scored this awesome vintage bedroom set that it was going to be the anchor for the room.

Then I saw General  Finishes’ Coastal Blue and I knew I was onto something.

I wasn’t quite expecting to find so much at HomeGoods, but as always… I seem to black out and lose all self-control when I enter that store.

After a great family dinner which included Jeff’s grandparents, Louise and Roland – who are up from Florida (love when they visit!) Jeff hung the curtain rods and I finally put a handle on the closet door.

So today, Sunday, Jeff and I loaded in all of the new accessories and then we brought the bedroom set over from my workshop on the farm. I love, love, love how it came out and can’t wait to have our first sleepover guests!
